Sofia Baig is Monpure London's Lead Trichologist and a renowned Scalp Micropigmentation and Hair Loss Specialist. We sat down with her to get lowdown on what it really takes to repair and maintain healthy hair.
Sofia highlights how hormone fluctuations and perimenopause can affect our hair and her expert advice to achieve hair vitality.
What led you to a career as a trichologist?
I started out over a decade ago as a scalp micro-pigmentation practitioner, receiving training in both the UK and the USA to help people dealing with hair loss and thinning. My passion for this field naturally led me to pursue a career in Trichology, where I dove even deeper into the science of scalp and hair health. Wanting to add holistic elements to my practice, I trained in Reiki, which allows me to combine these skills and create a warm and supportive environment for my clients in my clinic. I’m seeing incredible before-and-afters, and it’s truly fulfilling to help people feel their best, inside, and out!
With over a decade of incredible experience, you've witnessed the evolving conversation and breakthrough research around hair and scalp. What changes do you think have had the most impact and how do you reflect this in your work?
As a Trichologist I've seen significant changes in both scientific understanding and societal attitudes toward hair and scalp health. The breaking of taboos surrounding hair loss has encouraged more people to seek help, while the growing awareness of scalp care and the microbiome's role has transformed treatment approaches. I incorporate this knowledge into my practice by emphasising personalised care that addresses both the symptoms and underlying factors of hair loss, empowering my clients with effective solutions and support on their hair health journey.
Just like our skin, we need to take care of our hair differently as we age. What are your top tips for at-home hair care particularly for women going through perimenopause?
As we age, especially during perimenopause, hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in hair texture and density, often resulting in increased hair thinning and dryness. My top tips for at-home hair care include using a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo and a moisturising conditioner to combat these issues. Regular scalp massages can stimulate circulation and promote growth, while minimising heat styling helps reduce damage. A balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants supports hair health, and staying hydrated along with managing stress through practices like yoga can positively impact overall hair vitality.
Are there any lifestyle/wellbeing focused solutions that can help us recover or maintain healthy hair?
Absolutely! Lifestyle and well-being are vital for maintaining healthy hair. A balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and protein supports hair strength and growth, while staying hydrated nourishes hair follicles. Regular exercise improves blood circulation to the scalp, and stress management techniques like yoga and meditation can prevent stress-related hair loss. Additionally, sufficient sleep is essential for overall health and hair vitality. Incorporating these lifestyle changes can significantly enhance the health and vibrancy of your hair over time.
For us busy, on-the-go women, what are your go-to handbag beauty essentials right now?
I have a few handbag beauty essentials that I love. My favourite is the SANN Solid Lip Serum in "Wild," a deep berry shade that adds a lovely seasonal pop of colour while keeping my lips hydrated. For my hair, I always carry a mini–Tangle Teezer brush to easily detangle any knots, along with Living Proof Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray. This spray instantly refreshes fine, flat, or thin hair, providing heat protection and adding volume without weighing it down. Together with my lip serum, these essentials help me maintain a polished look throughout the day.
